Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
Substance abuse prevention has been the leading issue addressed by MIPH. We are home to the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center which is Minnesota’s lead training, information and technical assistance resource. Also MIPH is the home of the Minnesota Prevention Resource Clearinghouse that disseminates a wide range of materials to Minnesota residents.
In addition, MIPH manages CSAP’s Central Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT) covering a ten (10) state region and several tribal nations including Red Lake Nation. CAPT provides training, information and technical assistance regarding the latest research on strategies, policies and programs designed to enhance substance abuse prevention.
With the rise in illicit drug use, such as methamphetamines, substance abuse prevention continues to be an area of concern throughout Minnesota. As a result, the MIPH continues to stay connected to the latest research. We are committed to bridging public health research into practice and a major emphasis in our work is substance abuse prevention.
In the area of tobacco prevention, MIPH can provide technical assistance with the development of local coalitions to build statewide and local policies around smoke free public facilities. We have also provided resources on the dangers of second hand smoke and information to prevent children and teenagers from using tobacco.
MIPH also can provide technical assistance to communities on coalition building strategies which lead to the development of policies, programs and practices around underage drinking polices.
