Substance Abuse: A Day In the Life...

... of an American Adolescent. "Startling" is the word SAMHSA uses to describe the findings of a national report issued on adolescent substance abuse in the U.S.

• 250,000 emergency room visits by adolescents in 2008.
• On an average day, 508,000 adolescents drink alcohol; 641,000 use illicit drugs, over 1 million smoke cigarettes.

The Study recently released entitled "A Day In The Life of American Adolescents: Substance Abuse Facts Update" tells us we have a lot of work to do.

Copies of the report are available free of charge we are told, by calling SAMHSA's Health Information Network at 1-877-726-4727. The full report is available at http://oas.samhsa.gov/2k10/185/185 Typical Day.htm
