Not What the Doctor Ordered? Trends and Tools to Prevent Prescription and OTC Medication Abuse

Rick Moldenhauer, MS, LADC, ICADC, LPCC is a Treatment Services Consultant at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, DHS.  Rick has 25+ years of direct care experience in a wealth of settings involving chemical dependency treatment.  He is on a variety of State and Federal initiatives involving best practices and committees for various purposes.  He is an author, frequent speaker and technical assistant in quality delivery of chemical dependency services.

About the Forum:  Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in Minnesota, as well as nationally.  To advance the understanding of the multifaceted nature of this issue and the extent to which it is a concern in Minnesota, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division of the Department of Human Services, together with the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center, are presenting this regional forum.  The forum will benefit prevention professionals, law enforcement, addiction counselors, public health personnel, educators, pharmaceutical personnel, nurses andd others who are interested in this important public health issue.

Participant Objectives: Attendees will be able to 

  1. identify patterns in prescription and OTC drug abuse by frequency, gender, age group and race
  2. identify the symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal from the three common categories of abuse prescription medications
  3. gain knowledge into prevention strategies specific for prescription medications
