From the Director...

Gambling problems among women are a relatively new concern. Recent changes in the availability of legal gambling throughout the country has resulted in more women gambling and a greater number of women developing gambling problems.

Historically, problem gamblers were usually men. Yet over the past several years the vast majority of the high profile gambling problems here in Minnesota have involved women.

This edition of Beyond the Odds has a special focus on women and gambling. The poster on the cover was created as part of a public awareness campaign on women and gambling problems.

This edition also includes Jay Bambery's last column as manager of the Department of Human Services Gambling Program. Jay has been a dedicated advocate for problem gamblers, their families and those professionals who work with problem gamblers. His contributions to the field have been significant.

Jay was honored with a standing ovation by members of the State's Gambling Advisory Committee at its May meeting. We will miss him and want to wish him well.

Thanks, Jay!
