ZAP
Zero Adult Provider
Underage drinking is a serious problem in Minnesota and across the nation. Youth who drink are more likely to have a car crash, get into a fight, have unsafe sex, experience problems in school, or become chemically dependent. Preventing underage drinking must become a top priority in communities.
Preventing underage drinking is not just about getting kids to say no to alcohol. It’s also about getting adults to stop providing alcohol to kids. In virtually every case of underage drinking, an adult provided the alcohol –
an older friend or sibling, a clerk at a convenience store, or sometimes even a parent. We must cut of these sources of alcohol to youth if we hope to reduce underage drinking.
Some of the most effective ways to reduce underage drinking are through policy change and enforcement of laws related to youth access to alcohol. Effective solutions often involve the judicial system, law enforcement, and other community representatives. All too often, agencies are forced to rely only on their own resources and abilities. Many people and agencies need to be involved in determining and implementing an effective response to prevent and deter underage drinking. The Zero Adult Provider (ZAP) project aims to do just that – bring multiple agencies together to prevent underage drinking and identify adult providers.
MIPH recently awarded our ZAP grant for 2010-2011 to McLeod County, Minnesota. We are excited to work with this group of people committed to reducing youth access to alcohol.
MIPH staff are available to work with you and your partners even if you do not have a ZAP grant. We can answer your questions, send resources, attend meetings, and help you problem solve. We are here to help so please contact us today if we can be of assistance.
